What is the difference between buffing and burnishing a VCT floor?

So your VCT floor is not looking as good as when you first got them waxed. Now it is time to maybe burnish or buff them. What is the difference? Ok, let's talk about it. Buffing is when you use a machine with a RPM rating of 175 to like 300 RPMs. Buffing will get your floor shining again, but it is not as fast as a burnisher. So what is a burnisher? A burnisher is a machine that has high RPMs, like 1000 plus RPMs. These types of machines are way faster than a buffer, so you get a better shine and you get it done quicker than with a buffer. Sometimes people call a burnisher a buffer for short.

But you hear people in the cleaning industry say buff, then you see a burnisher. When I made this video in the link above, I did not know the difference. So I had to learn.

What does burnishing do?

Burnishing will make your VCT floors look cleaner and remove light scratches from your floor finish.

How do you prepare the floor for burnishing?

You will need to sweep and mop the floor to get it as clean as possible before you start to burnish your VCT floor.

What pad should be used?

So, for what pad to use, you can use white, red, pink, tan, or even a gray hog hair pad. I know you are thinking, so what pad is right for my floor?

The lighter the color of the pad, the softer it is. The darker the pad, the rougher it is.

I have used them all for different jobs. If you are just learning to buff, I would recommend you first start with a white pad. It is the softest, and you can get to understand how it works with experience. Then you can move up to red or tan or whatever color you think. If you have bumps in your floor, I would not recommend using a red pad. When I was an employee of a local school district, there was a school that had bumps in the floor, and another floor tech used a red pad to burnish a VCT floor, resulting in pink spots at random places on the floor. Yes, we got it corrected, but it took scrubbing and reapplying new wax.

Can I use a spray to burnish?

Yes, you can use a spray to buff or burnish a VCT floor.

There are different brands of spray buff/burnish. They all help in getting the floor to look good, and they leave a pleasant smell behind. Then your building will smell good, and your VCT floors will look good.
